Beating the Instagram Algorithm

Method 1

Open the app and check for recent likes or new followers

Scroll rapidly through feed

Stop briefly at image of a beautiful lake from inside a van. Assume the photographer has a perfect life

Stop briefly at a night street photo with 100k likes. Assume the photographer has a perfect life

Repeat on the Explore tab

Watch a few random mindless videos

Save a product ad for later

Post a new photo, regardless of quality (for ‘consistency’)

Switch over the Facebook

Method 2

Scroll slowly through the first 5-10 images, adding a few comments

Check for recent posts from photographers, artists or friends you’re aiming to support and encourage

Respond to any new comments

Post a new photo only if it’s good, with some thoughts about the image and why you’re posting it

Go and make something, don’t check back in to see how many likes your image got

Method 1 probably keeps the algorithm happy.

I don’t know about you, but Method 2 keeps me more happy.
